About Project STYLE

Project STYLE is a comprehensive, integrated substance abuse and HIV prevention program that has been specifically designed to provide age-appropriate services to young adults (ages 18 to 24) living in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The program is supported through a 5-year Minority Aids Initiative (MAI) grant from The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Some of the services offered include:

  • Educational group sessions on HIV/AIDS, STDs, and substance abuse
  • Free risk-reduction counseling
  • Free HIV testing
  • Linkages to other related community resources
Participation in these counseling and education services will have two main effects. First, it will help reduce the factors that make young adults more vulnerable to substance abuse disorders and/or HIV infection (risk factors). Second, it will help increase the factors that protect young adults from substance abuse disorders and/or HIV infection (protective factors). The reduction of risk factors and the simultaneous building of protective factors will decrease the incidence of substance abuse disorders and HIV case rates for young adults in Miami-Dade County.

  • Availability/use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs in neighborhood
  • Community instability
  • Economic deprivation/poverty/residence in a disadvantaged neighborhood
  • Favorable attitudes toward drug use
  • Mental disorder/mental health problem
  • Risky sexual behavior, including 'Down-low' behavior
  • Homelessness
  • Immigration-related issues
  • Incarceration/re-entry
  • Lack of health insurance
  • Male-female power dynamics and gender role disparity
  • Presence of other sexually transmitted infections

  • Economically sustainable/stable communities
  • Good relationships with parents/bonding or attachment to family
  • Healthy sense of self
  • Involvement with positive peer group activities and norms
  • Neighborhood/social cohesion
  • Positive/resilient temperament, Religiosity/valuing involvement in organized religious activities
  • School motivation/positive attitude toward school
  • Social competencies and problem-solving skills
